Suminagashi Marbling Workshops
Step into the serene and captivating world of Suminagashi—the traditional Japanese art of marbling with ink on water. This ancient technique involves floating ink onto the surface of water, gently manipulating it into mesmerising, flowing patterns, and then carefully transferring the design onto paper. The result is a beautifully organic print that can never be exactly repeated—each one is as unique as a fingerprint.
Marbling is a joyful and accessible process that sparks creativity and wonder, whether you're completely new to it or looking to reconnect with the technique. There’s something especially magical about watching the ink dance and drift across the water, and then seeing that fleeting pattern captured on paper in an instant.
Two-Hour Workshop - Saturday 4th October 2pm-4pm
In this workshop, we’ll be focusing on Suminagashi, which uses only ink, water, and paper—keeping the process simple, mindful, and meditative. I’ll begin the session with a brief introduction to the technique and its origins, followed by a live demonstration to show you the basic methods and a few tips for creating beautiful results. After that, you'll have plenty of time to explore, experiment, and play with the technique at your own pace, with my guidance and support throughout.
All materials are provided, and no previous experience is needed—just a sense of curiosity and a willingness to dive in.

Workshops at The Oast Studio – Hartfield, East Sussex
I also run extended Suminagashi marbling workshops at the beautiful Oast Studio in Hartfield, East Sussex. These four-hour sessions allow for a deeper dive into traditional Suminagashi using sumi ink, as well as an opportunity to experiment with oil-based marbling techniques. It's a perfect setting for slow, immersive making.
